Description of the Artwork
“The Sestieri” is the first of the five sculptures belonging to the collection entitled “The Other Side of the Moon”.
Cesare Catania moved to Palazzo Donà dalle Rose during his personal exhibition to produce new sculptures and new works of art. The artist residency gives the artist the opportunity to be influenced by the city that hosts him. In this way, Cesare Catania’s new artistic production is a continuation of his poetics which for the occasion will mix with the artistic influences of one of the capitals of art history. Catania uses, among others, materials found locally, mixing them together with steel, silicone and acrylic, to give life to a new collection called “The other side of the Moon” and which is connected to the previous projects developed by the Donà Foundation from the Roses while remaining adherent to his own geometric and eclectic sculptural art.
The first of the 5 new sculptures is called “I Sestieri”. The division of the city of Venice into sestieri dates back to the origins of Venice. Fascinated by the subdivision of the city, by the unmistakable layout of the buildings and by the apparently random numbering, Cesare Catania dedicates this first sculpture to the urban planning of the Serenissima, indelibly marking on the lateral band of the wooden belt the house numbers that most characterized his first residence at the Palace. The materials used are rusty steel and silicone on one side and pear wood on the other, fusing together the love for technology on the one hand and the discovery of Venetian tradition on the other.
The choice of color and use of materials is interesting. The use of wood, both in the Sestieri and in the rest of the “L’Altro Lato della Luna” collection, is determined by the desire to enhance what for Cesare Catania is the main material on which the city of Venice rests: in fact everything in Serenissima is based on wood, starting from the foundations of the buildings up to the nautical industry which for centuries has characterized the power of the city of Venice.
The insert in the main ring of the dark green silicone and acrylic sculpture represents that iridescent band of moss that can be observed on all the Venetian buildings in contact with water, that band that appears and disappears with the alternation of the tides and which literally divides the aquatic world from the emerged world.
The channels, which for three quarters of the circular wooden ring are represented in an orderly manner and in bright red, in the silicone and acrylic dial lose consistency and ignite in random splashes of red acrylic.
The points of intense blue Murano glass that sail between the canals represent the reflections of the sky on the water of Venice.
On the edge of the ring, which physically represents the Sestieri, the author engraves on pear wood some of the house numbers and the names of some Sestieri which for him marked a stay and a residence as an artist full of meanings.
